About Advanced Rubber Materials
SBR(Styrene Butadiene Rubber)
SBR is a synthetic replacement for natural rubber. It has little resistance to heat, ultraviolet light, ozone, gasoline, oil and hydrocarbons, but has good abrasion resistance. This is a good low cost synthetic polymer for natural rubber replacement applications.
Natural Rubber
This is one of the most widely used elastomers in dynamic applications and a lot of tires. NR has exceptional mechanical properties and fatigue resistance. NR has high tear and high tensile, high resilience, good adhesion to metals and fabrics. Some drawbacks to NR is the fact that it has low resistance to heat, UV, ozone, gasoline and oil. NR is not suitable in any application that requires continuous temperatures in excess of 100C.
CR(Polychloroprene Rubber)
| CR has good strength and fatigue resistance. It also has good resistance to oil, oxidation and ozone. This is a great general purpose polymer that can be used in almost any application. |
NBR(Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber)
NBR has good oil and fuel resistance and is affected by ozone, ketones and hydraulic fluid. NBR can be used in applications requiring hydrocarbon exposure. PVC is often blended with NBR to improve outdoor weather resistance.
Polyisoprene
Even though IR is synthetic natural rubber, in general it is not used interchangeably with natural rubber because of some minor differences. Typically IR is lighter in color, more uniform and of higher purity than NR. Some people can be allergic to the proteins in natural rubber, which make IR a good alternative in many of these types of applications.
FKM (Fluorocarbon Rubber)
Fluoroelastomers can be used in a wide variety of high performance applications. These elastomers perform with long-term reliability in the harshest environments. They have extremely good heat resistance often maintaining their properties even after brief exposure to temperatures above their service limits. In addition, they can resist many fuel, solvents and chemicals. FKM does not perform well at low temperatures, so in those cases a Fluorosilicone may be a better choice.
