General Motors Issues a Recall on 1,340,447 Vehicles in Us Due to Problem with EPS Assist

American automaker General Motors (GM) has issued a voluntary recall on 1,340,447 vehicles in the US due to problem with the electric power steering (EPS) assist.

Vehicles affected under this recall include certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6.

The EPS assist in these vehicles could loss at any time while driving. This will increase the driver effort required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers of the carmaker will replace the EPS motor, the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit in the respective vehicles.

As the parts are not currently available, GM expects to send an interim notification around 28 April 2014 to owners of these vehicles. Following this, the company will mail a second letter when parts are available.
