Orlando-based RMD Technologies and Verizon have jointly developed a new system with a ‘smart’ thermometer and communication network in a bid to protect customers against food-borne illness as well as prevent costly spoilage.
RMD's new D-Mometer and TAM Network is a 'machine-to-machine' (M2M) solution that offers organisations and consumers real-time data on the time and temperature exposure of meats, produce and other perishable stuff.
The device and network will deliver text alerts, emails and other notifications directly to smartphones and tablets when foodstuff come into the "temperature danger zone" over equipment issues, power failure or other factors.
RMD Technologies' Dominick Tamborra said: "It's especially challenging and time-consuming to bring a food-related technology to market, but Verizon and our other partners were invaluable in this process.
"Combined with the size, strength and reliability of the Verizon Wireless network, the D-Mometer is a powerful product to protect businesses and consumers alike."
The time and temperature statistics will also be broadcasted to a cloud-based server for further notifications, assisting companies to take action before spoilage occurs.
Mainly aimed at the food service industry, the new technology will be on sale later this year and can also be used to protect anything that needs accurate temperature control, including pharmaceuticals.
The D-Mometer and TAM Network are expected to be available later in 2014, with RMD already evincing interest from top national restaurant chains and other businesses concerned about food safety and spoilage.
Verizon Partner Program in Central Florida manager Ryan Lopez said: "RMD and Verizon together have developed a robust connected solution for a very critical issue.
"We're excited to see the launch of this technology and pleased that our company's resources could play an important role in bringing this project to market."
