Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce the company’s first pickup truck by 2020, and become the first premium manufacturer to produce a pickup truck under its brand name.
According to the German automaker, the company is simply responding to the market shift, as there is a good sale of pickup trucks.
The company also highlighted that the new line of vehicle will be created by Mercedes-Benz Vans division, which is currently responsible for the production of vehicles that are used for commercial as well as private purposes.
Mercedes will initially target its new vehicle towards Latin America, South Africa, Australia, and European markets, where pickup trucks have seen sustained growth.
Mercedes-Benz Cars Division head Dr. Dieter Zetsche said: "The Mercedes-Benz pickup will contribute nicely to our global growth targets.
"We will enter this segment with our distinctive brand identity and all of the vehicle attributes that are typical of the brand with regard to safety, comfort, powertrains, and value."
