Toyota to Manufacture New Auris Model at UK Car Plant

Toyota said that it will build the third generation of Auris hatchback model at its UK car plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire.

The engines for the model will be sourced from Toyota Motor UK’s (TMUK) factory in Deeside, North Wales.

Last year, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) announced an investment of over £240m to upgrade the Burnaston site.

The company is adding new equipment, technologies and systems to manufacture vehicles on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform.

Toyota plans to premiere the new Auris at the Geneva Motor Show, which will be held this month.

TME president and CEO Johan van Zyl said manufacturing TNGA based vehicles locally is a key part of the company's plan to strengthen the global competitiveness of its plants.

“Today’s announcement that we will manufacture the new Auris at Burnaston, with most engines to be supplied from Deeside, shows our confidence in the skills and capabilities of our TMUK members.

“As a company, we are doing what we can to secure the competitiveness of our UK operations as a leading manufacturing centre for our European business. With around 85% of our UK vehicle production exported to European markets, continued free and frictionless trade between the UK and Europe will be vital for future success.”

Toyota established the Burnaston factory and TMUK’s engine facility in Deeside, North Wales, in 1989 as its first major production sites in Europe.

The facilities, which began production in 1992, have built over four million vehicles and about five million engines and engine sets in the UK.

The plants have benefited from Toyota investment totalling over £2.75bn and together currently employ more than 3,000 people.
