Volvo Will Introduce Noiseless Electric Buses in Gothenburg

Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo Car Group will introduce noiseless electric buses in Gothenburg, Sweden by 2015 in collaboration with the Swedish Energy Agency, the City of Gothenburg, Vasttrafik, Lindholmen Science Park and Johanneberg Science Park.

Claimed to be completely powered by electricity from renewable sources, the buses will offer services as part of the Gothenburg's public-transport system on the routes between Johanneberg Science Park and Lindholmen Science Park in Hisingen.

Volvo president and CEO Olof Persson said this represents an entirely new mode of travel and will allow for the public-transport system to contribute to a more pleasant urban environment.

"A silent and emissions-free public-transport system will enable the inclusion of locations in the city that are currently off limits," Persson said.

The service is expected to support the plans of the Gothenburg to decrease its climate impact in order to become a climate-neutral city, while increasing sustainable travel.

As part of the collaboration, the company will also manage the creation and test runs of new bus-stop systems, traffic-routing systems, safety concepts, energy supply and business models.
