Packaging company Egg Posure that was founded by the Dutch Twinpack and the Danish food producer Hedegaard Foods has created Eggyplay that can double up as packaging for eggs and a sustainable toy.
Eggs Posure had launched its innovative packaging idea at the Anuga Fair in Cologne, Germany, in October 2013.
Manufactured from brightly coloured plastic, the cartons can be used as clickable building blocks as they fit perfectly together like large duplo blocks.
The company said in a statement that the cartons are suitable for children as they can be used to make a large castle, tower or playhouse. These are available in four colours.
However, the company had to meet certain criteria that certified it as both packaging and a toy.
Hedegaard Foods marketing manager Mette Due Andersen said: "Our Eggyplay cartons must be dishwasher-proof, or resistant to repeated exposure to high temperatures, moisture and detergents.
"We made the decision to use Verstraete IML's dishwasher-proof in-mold labels. The labels are produced with dishwasher-proof inks and a special layer of varnish. This offers optimal protection for the colors and the quality of the label during repeated washes."
The company also said that 100% recyclable polypropylene (PP05) was used in making the Eggyplay that is said to weigh less than a traditional egg carton.
The packaging also helps in enhancing transport by occupying half the stacking space in comparison to traditional packaging.
