Nissin Foods Updates Top Ramen Noodles Recipe

Nissin Foods has updated the recipe of its Top Ramen brand in the US by reducing sodium content and removing added MSG and artificial flavors in the noodles range.

The Japanese instant noodle maker says that the major recipe change in its entire Top Ramen range is to address consumer demand for less sodium content and use of fewer artificial ingredients.

As part of the changes, Nissin Foods has cut down sodium content by an average of 15% for all flavors of Top Ramen. Although, it has completely removed MSG, the noodles range would still have small traces of it from naturally occurring glutamates.

Nissin Foods USA marketing director Gary Lai said: “Top Ramen is a product that consumers love – on its own or dressed up. What's imperative to us is that the core product – the ramen noodle – maintains its delicious flavor and integrity.

“However, in response to consumer demand, we've been working diligently to remove unnecessary ingredients and lower the sodium while preserving the same taste and texture.”

The updated Top Ramen range has been rolled out with new, modernized product packaging across store shelves throughout the US.

Nissin Foods says that the new packaging highlights the two vegetarian flavors Soy Sauce, formerly known as Oriental, and Chili to make them easily identified on the retail shelf. The move was made to address consumer demand for vegetarian options, stated the noodle maker.

In September last year, the noodles manufacturer announced recipe changes for its Cup Noodles brand in the US to make it more healthier and nutritious by reducing sodium content and removing use of MSG and artificial flavors.
