Expand Automotive Research Project

American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) has signed an agreement with the University of Michigan to extend their collaborative automotive research project until 2017.

The collaborative automotive research efforts began in 1998 with the launch of Collaborative Research Laboratories (CRL) at the University of Michigan.

Under the extended deal, both the entities will form a new Automotive CRL, which will create an organizational umbrella structure and focus on research into engine systems and advanced manufacturing.

The agreement will also allow GM and the University of Michigan to have a separate CRL that concentrates on smart material developments.

University of Michigan Engineering Dean Robert Vlasic said, "We believe our graduate students and faculty can operate as an extension of General Motors' global research and development activities, which we are confident will enhance GM while providing exceptional experiences for our students."

Students will use laser imaging diagnostics and conduct engine simulation studies at the new Automotive CRL's engine systems research lab in order to develop efficient engines with ultra-low emissions.

GM Global R&D chief technology officer, vice president Jon Lauckner said the company's relationship with the University of Michigan has provided benefits because these young minds carry out research on real-world issues that impact vehicle innovation, design and manufacturing operations.

"We expect more great things to come from our work with the University of Michigan," Lauckner added.
