Ireland has become the first country from the EU to supply beef to the US after a span of 17 years, with the country's produce to be served as part of a trade mission to promote the lifting of the EU-wide beef ban.
Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney along with Bord Bia representatives and Irish beef companies is on a trip to New York, Boston and Washington DC to attend three-day trade promotion mission, reports RTE News.
They will be meeting US meat buyers to secure contracts.
The US beef market is a potential goldmine for Irish producers as US beef prices are currently at a record high and the country imports 10% of its annual consumption of 11.5 billion kgs.
US imposed Europe-wide ban in January 1998 as a result of the BSE crisis.
