Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo has delivered its first B5R Hybrid bus to the CAT service run by the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia.
Powered by an EEV 5L diesel engine that produces output of 215hp, which is supported by a 120kW electric motor, the bus is manufactured by the company's plant located at Perth.
Volvo Bus Australia general manager David Mead said: "As the hybrid technology continues to develop and the company has the opportunity to test the suitability of our technology in new markets like Australia, we expect demand to keep growing worldwide."
The Volgren body of the bus is built following the same chassis and body design of the company's B7RLE.
The bus features the electric motor that acts both as a motor and a generator by recharging the battery when braking and works with the diesel engine to power the bus at higher speeds, while the diesel engine is switched off at lower speeds.
