German automobile major Mercedes-Benz has expanded its global output network, kicking off the production of GLA compact SUV at its Pune manufacturing facility in India.
In what becomes an addition to such network having Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, the plant will produce six different model series, including sedans S-, E- and C-Class as well as SUVs GL and the M-Class.
Another assembly unit is in the offing in Brazil, expected to be operational in 2016 where a new assembly plant is currently under construction.
The plant's extension was recently finished in the Pune facility, with an installed capacity of 20,000 units.
To gear up for the local assembly of compact car GLA, synchronized conveyor systems, new assembly lines, and a new roller tester were installed amongst other devices that have been put in place at the plant.
Mercedes-Benz cars, production and supply chain management Markus Sch?fer said: "The start of production of the GLA in India marks the first time we are producing compact cars in our global assembly network along with sedans and SUVs.
"We are thus entering the next stage with our market-specific assembly, allowing us to serve local demands in a flexible and efficient manner according to highest quality standards."
The Pune plant, which was flagged off in 2009, entailed an investment of around €150m so far. Moreover, Mercedes-Benz has clocked a three-fold rise in the sales of compact SUV in India from January to March in 2015.
Mercedes-Benz India managing director and CEO Eberhard Kern said: "Rolling out our first ever locally manufactured GLA and commencing production from India's largest installed luxury car production facility are two very significant accomplishments for Mercedes-Benz in India."
