Supermarket chain in the US, Weis Markets has partnered with custom thermoformed packaging solutions supplier Clearly Clean Products to develop new meat trays that are 100% recyclable.
The new modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) trays are part of a sustainability program at the grocery chain to help minimize its carbon footprint.
Weis Markets, which began introducing the new meat packaging in all of its 162 stores for kabobs and ground sausage earlier in 2012, further plans to extend it to its ground beef product line in early 2013.
Made from 80% recycled PET plastic, the new Peel-A-Tray packaging will replace more than 11t of nonrecyclable air-sealed and polypropylene trays, on which fresh meat products were earlier wrapped.
As part of its sustainable practices, the grocery chain is providing recycling opportunities for its associates as well as its customers and is increasing its conservation efforts continually.
Weis claimed that the company diverted more than 37 million pounds of recyclables from landfills, in one year.
