Global producer of release papers Ahlstrom has announced a new sustainability initiative for recycling silicone coated paper release liners, which are used by the pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) label industry.
As part of the initiative, Ahlstrom will collect supercalendered papers, commonly known as 'glassine' through one or more logistics partners, once the end-users such as brand owners or retailers use them as carriers of PSA labels.
The liners picked-up from end-users in Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands at free of cost, will be recycled at the company's Osnabrück plant in Germany into specialty paper production.
According to Ahlstrom, the initiative will be supported by Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials Division, which uses its contacts across the value chain to make label printers and brand owners aware of the opportunity.
The company claims that the initiative, which increases the available recycling options in the market, will help divert paper liner waste from landfill or incineration and also increase the quantities recycled into paper.
Ahlstrom operates four release papers production sites in Europe and one in South America, all of which are part of its Label and Processing business area.
