Tetra Pak Has Developed a New Whey Filtration System for Dairy Manufacturers

Tetra Pak, a Sweden-based food packaging and processing solutions provider, has developed a new whey filtration system for dairy manufacturers, which allows them to concentrate whey for use as an ingredient in a variety of food products.

According to the company, the new system is a standardized filtration which uses reverse osmosis process to separate excess water from whey, while retaining the dissolved salts, lactose, acids, proteins, fats and bacteria.

Unlike the traditional filtration technology which is costly and customized, the new system is suitable for small and medium sized dairies and is easy to install at an approximate 30% less costs over customized alternatives.

Tetra Pak Food Category Cheese director Jaco Baron said, "This cost-effective whey filtration solution helps small and medium sized dairies compete on more even footing with larger dairies while also improving their profitability and decreasing their environmental footprint."

Whey is the liquid by-product generated during the cheese-making processes and is often dumped as waste.
