Dubai's first electric vehicle charging station has been introduced at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA’s) main office.
Dubai Supreme Council of Energy Chairman HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum inaugurated the charging station.
The charging station is a part of the previously launched Smart Dubai initiative, aimed at making Dubai 'the happiest city on earth' capable of providing efficient and seamless experience to natives and visitors.
DEWA CEO HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: "Currently, DEWA is implementing three main initiatives.
"These are connecting solar energy to houses and buildings, smart applications through smart meters and grids, and the infrastructure for vehicle charging stations. DEWA has started implementing the electric vehicle charging station infrastructure initiative."
As part of its third initiative, DEWA is planning to build the infrastructure required to introduce electric vehicles in Dubai, along with the establishment of 100 charging stations by the end of 2015.
As part of the project DEWA is joining forces with national and private organisations including Dubai Municipality and RTA.
According to DEWA, 16 charging stations will be installed during the first phase of the project for public usage, and phase two will involve installation of 84 different charging stations across dubai by 2015.
