General Motors Unveil a New Engine for 2014 Chevrolet Impala

US based automobile manufacturer General Motors has unveiled a new engine with advanced valvetrain technology for its 2014 Chevrolet Impala flagship sedan.

The Ecotec 2.5L four-cylinder diesel engine generates an output of 196hp (146kw) and 186lbft of torque (252nm), while offering fuel consumption of 21mpg in city and 31mpg on highway.

According to the company, the redesigned engine with direct injection will be quiet with engine noise intensity reduced by 40% whilethe radiated noises have been increased to higher frequency range above 2,000Hz.

The new engine allows the valves to open and close by varied amounts and at different times depending on power demand to offer better fuel efficiency or power.

Other changes to engine include, integrating a sound-absorbing cover into the intake manifold and quieter drive chains and relocating the balance shafts from the cylinder block to a cassette within the oil pan.

The company will off the Chevrolet Impala in three engine variants, including the 3.6L V-6, the new Ecotec 2.5L four-cylinder and the Ecotec 2.4L engines with eAssist.
