German automotive supplier Continental has launched a new version of the electric vacuum pump (EVP) for vehicles that reduces CO2 emissions.
The EVP is claimed to meet the automobile emission standards that are expected to be imposed by he European Union (EU) starting from 2015, under which the limit for new vehicles would decrease to 95 grams of CO2 by 2020.
According to the tests conducted by the supplier, the new EVP has the capacity to decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 1.4g/km to 1.8g/km.
Continental Chassis and Safety Division Hydraulic Brake Systems Business Unit head Michael Juerging said, "Since it does not rely on the engine, it can provide a vacuum even if the motor is switched off as part of a stop-start function."
The EVP supplies vacuum required by the electric, hybrid and diesel vehicles as well as gasoline-powered engines with direct fuel injection.
Additionally, the EVP is said to help the decrease in CO2 emissions from conventional internal-combustion engines.
