OraSure Technologies, a developer of oral fluid diagnostic and collection devices, has launched a new in-home rapid oral HIV test across the US.
The OraQuick test, which the company claims, is the first rapid infectious disease test for in-home use and is an over-the-counter version of an oral swab rapid test, OraQuick ADVANCE.
The test uses oral swab samples to detect antibodies of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 and provides results within 20 minutes.
OraSure Technologies president and chief executive officer Douglas Michels said for the first time, individuals now have access to an in-home rapid oral HIV test that will empower pateints to learn their HIV status in the comfort and privacy of their own home.
"This is a tremendous breakthrough in our fight against HIV and AIDS," Michels added.
The company said that the oral HIV test is now available nationwide at more than 30,000 retailers and online and at OraQuick.com.
