Mazda Plans to Add New Diesel Engine Powered Vehicles

Japanese carmaker Mazda Motor is set to add new diesel engine powered vehicles to its American product line for the first time.

Mazda6 will be the first model to be rolled off the line with the new diesel engine, and will join the company's lineup in spring 2014.

Mazda North America president and chief executive officer James O'Sullivan was quoted by inautonews.com as saying that the company elected to focus its marketing muscle on the Mazda3 first.

"We don't have a lot of extra money to spend on marketing unlike some of the people on the floor," O'Sullivan added.

"The SkyActiv technology has been bullet proof."

Earlier in August 2013, the Japanese automaker announced its plans to increase production capacity of its SKYACTIV-G gasoline engines and SKYACTIV-D diesel units by 25% at its Hiroshima Plant in Japan.

It also announced that it will invest about $120m to build an engine machining factory at its new vehicle production facility in Mexico.

Expected to be commissioned in October 2014, the new factory will produce SKYACTIV engines for vehicles manufactured at Mazda Motor Manufacturing de Mexico (MMMdM), which is a joint venture between Mazda and Sumitomo, including the Mazda3 and Mazda2 models.
