French carmaker Renault has commenced the construction of a new vehicle production plant in the south-west of Oran, Algeria.
Slated to open in November 2014, the plant will produce the company's New Symbol cars for the local market. This project is sponsored by the Algerian Ministry for Industrial Development.
Renault Symbol is a supermini car introduced in late 1999, under the Clio Symbol name, as the saloon version of the second generation Renault Clio.
Symbol, which was renewed in March 2013, is has witnessed a major success in Algeria. New Symbol brings major improvements in terms of roadholding, space, comfort and technology, with a more attractive design and more modern equipment.
This new plant will create 350 direct jobs in the region and will have the capacity to produce 25,000 vehicles per year during the first phase.
Renault will also support the development of local sub-contracting while transmitting its technology to the companies selected in the country.
Renault Algérie Production CEO Bernard Sonilhac said: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our team and our partners for their efforts and commitment in making this launch a success."
The company has sold more than 300,000 vehicles in the Algerian market in 2013.
