Testing conducted by the Leicestershire County Council has identified that Asda's own-brand corned beef contained about 50% horsemeat.
On 8 March, Asda withdrew thousands of its own-brand corned beef tins from stores across the country after it was revealed that the product contained traces of horse DNA.
Leicestershire County Council conducted the testing earlier this week and found that one batch of the 340g tins contained about 50% horsemeat, reports The Sun. However, Asda stated that the internal tests showed that the corned beef product contained 5% horsemeat.
Asda Smart Price corned beef was manufactured by French supplier Toupnot and it is the eighth product of the retailer to test positive for traces of horse DNA, three of these products had pork DNA.
Asda spokesman was quoted by the website as saying that these corned beef products are safe to eat prior to the sell by dates, but consumers are advised to return the products for a full refund.
