Innovia Films, a UK-based Biofilms producer, has collaborated with Corbion Purac to develop Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) film that is transparent and resistant to higher temperatures.
According to Innovia, the new bioplastic film offers almost similar properties of an oil-based PET and exhibit considerably less shrinkage at high temperatures over the existing PLA films.
It would be useful for food and non-food packaging, including juice or soup pouches release liners for pressure sensitive products, window films, and protective films for smartphone screens.
Innovia product development manager Steve Langstaff said, "This new development will fill a performance gap in the market and is a great opportunity for both Innovia and Corbion Purac."
Corbion Purac Bioplastics senior vice president Jeroen Jonker said, "By pooling our expertise and combining our research strengths, we can develop a biobased performance film to rival traditional, oil-based standards."
"This will provide brandowners with the opportunity to select a more sustainable alternative for their film applications," Jonker added.
The PLA films will be showcased at the K 2013 International Trade Fair Plastics & Rubber scheduled to be held from 16 - 23 October in Dusseldorf, Germany.
