Canada Bread to Shut Down Its Bakery in Halifax in November

Canada Bread, a manufacturer and distributor of fresh bakery products, is set to shut down its bakery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in November.

The company will gradually phase out operations from as early as June, and will consolidate majority of production at its bakeries in Moncton and Woodstock, New Brunswick in Canada to ensure continued production of products under the Ben's brand.

Employing approximately 105 associates, the 50,000ft2 bakery produces sliced breads and English muffins primarily under the Ben's, Dempster's, Villaggio and private labels.

Canada Bread president Barry McLean said: "Our industry is under mounting competitive pressure to become more efficient and this means we have to make very difficult decisions.

"While this is the business reality, it is hard to make the necessary changes, particularly in a community where we have such a strong presence.

"We are doing everything possible to ease the impact on our people."

The company announced plans to provide severance packages to affected associates that go beyond provincial labour requirements, as well as personal counselling and ongoing outplacement services and workshops.

In addition, the associates will be encouraged to seek employment at other company facilities.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo, Canada Bread is a leading producer and distributor of packaged fresh bread and bakery products with brands such as Dempster's, Villaggio, POM, Bon Matin, Ben's, Healthy Way, McGavins and Vachon.
