Perodua Is Aiming to Invest RM790m to Build a Vehicle Plant in Near Current Facility

Malaysia based Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua (Perodua) is planning to invest RM790m ($253.8m) to set up a vehicle plant in near its current manufacturing facility in Rawang, Selangor.

The new plant will produce 100,000 vehicles per year on a single-shift cycle compared to 200,000 vehicles produced by the existing plant in two-shift cycle.

According to Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh cited by thesundaily.my the new plant will operate under a new company with a paid up capital RM200m ($64.2m) and 1,200 employees.

"This new plant is part of our five-year strategic roadmap to stay competitive in the ever liberalising automotive industry, helping us to be more productive and efficient while at the same time reducing costs," Salleh said.

The company is expected to be incorporated in March 2013 with scheduled commencement of production in middle of 2014.

"We have to look at the strength of each facility. But both will complement one another. Whatever that we are going to produce, whether at the existing or new plant, it must meet the requirement of the market."

The new plant is part of company's plan to double vehicle export by 2015 from 10,000 units it currently exports.
