CCI Commissioned a $44m Waste Recycling Plant at Its Facility

The Caribbean Container (CCI) has commissioned a $44m waste recycling plant at its facility in Farm East Bank Demerara, Guyana, South America.

The new facility is a part of the company's strategy to strengthen its recycling capabilities to recover fiber from non-traditional sources.

The plant features equipment from Swedish food processing and packaging solutions Tetra Pak. It will produce fiber which will be used in CCI's paper recycling process.

CCI CEO Patricia Bacchus was quoted by Guyana Times as saying that the company has been experiencing shortage of old corrugated cardboards supplies.

"In light of this, the company's strategy is twofold. The first involves extending our private initiatives for local waste cardboard collection," Bacchus added.

The other way is establishing collection points across the region.

Earlier, the company relied on suppliers and local businesses to accumulate the cardboard waste but now it has collaborated with private waste disposal companies.

CCI and Tetra Pak have formed a joint venture in 2013 to work together on sustainable development and implement best environmental practices.

Additionally, CCI will install new equipment to convert poly-aluminum materials into value-added products.

CCI runs the only paper recycling mill in Caribbean Community (Caricom), and it manufactures linerboard and fluting medium, using waste paper as feedstock. The company uses paper produced by the mill to produce four color printed corrugated packaging as well as fiberboard fitments.
