Scottish company Insignia Technologies has announced the launch of a new smart label technology in a bid to help minimize the environmental and economic impact associated with wasted food.
The Embedded Timer label, which can be incorporated into any film lid, is activated when a packet is opened and triggers a timer that changes color as the food within loses freshness.
Insignia Technologies founding director Erik Smyth said the development is all about ensuring quality and freshness for the consumer while avoiding food from going to waste.
"The technology development partnership with the University of Strathclyde and the funding support of Scottish Enterprise has enabled us to bring this novel low-cost timing solution to the market place," Smyth said.
Insignia Technologies plans to roll-out its new development in food packaging technology in the UK, France and the US during 2013.
The company is also in the process of developing indicator products suitable for the likes of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals packaging, which it plans to launch before 2014.
