The National Transport Commission (NTC) has advised of the passing of its chief executive Nick Dimopoulos. Mr Dimopoulos passed away on 8 February 2013 after an illness, surrounded by his family.
Mr Dimopoulos’s professional career spanned industries such as mining, logistics, finance, infrastructure and transport.
Prior to joining the NTC he held senior positions in both the public and private sectors.
He headed up the Committee for Economic Development of Australia and worked in the Victorian Treasury and on World Bank infrastructure projects in China.
The commissioners and staff of the NTC honoured Mr Dimopoulos’s tremendous contribution to the organisation and the Australian transport industry. Mr Dimopoulos was a visionary, a tireless champion for transport reform and a proud father and husband.
Mr Dimopoulos’s positive influence on the NTC and the transport industry generally will be felt for years to come.
In lieu of flowers, Mr Dimopoulos’s family have requested donations to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
The Australian Trucking Association also expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Nick Dimopoulos.
The chairman of the ATA, David Simon, said Mr Dimopoulos had been a brave champion of transport reform.
“Under Mr Dimopoulos’s leadership, the NTC developed reforms that will be vital to the future of Australian transport, including the legislation for the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator,” Mr Simon said.
“Mr Dimopoulos’s legacy will be safer and more efficient roads, railways and shipping. His family and friends can be proud of the work he did.
“Mr Dimopoulos was not daunted by his illness. He continued to work in his demanding position even as it got worse. It was a display of bravery and grit that none of us who knew him will ever forget,” Mr Simon said.
George Konstandakos will continue in the interim as the NTC acting chief executive.
