The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), together with three other US food industry groups, has filed a lawsuit challenging Vermont’s mandatory GMO food labeling law.
The new law, which would take effect from 1 July 2016, mandates foods that are made entirely or partially with genetic engineering to be labeled to indicate the same.
According to GMA, Vermont's new mandatory food labeling law - Act 120 - is a costly and misguided measure that imposes heavy burden on food sellers, and will set the nation on a path toward a 50-state patchwork of GMO labeling policies that do nothing to improve the health and safety of consumers.
The petition challenging the Vermont law was filed in a state's federal district court. Other challengers to the law include Snack Food Association, International Dairy Foods Association and the National Association of Manufacturers.
