Intel's Mobileye to Build Fleet of 100 Self-Driving Vehicles

Mobileye, a subsidiary of chip-maker Intel, said that it will build a fleet of 100 level 4 SAE vehicles which will be tested across the US, Europe and Israel.

The vehicles will be fitted with the technology developed by Mobileye including computer vision, sensing, fusion, mapping and driving policy along with its parent company, Intel’s computing platform and expertise in data centre and 5G communications technologies.

The idea is to develop autonomous vehicles with cloud capabilities, or as Intel calls it, a complete ‘car-to-cloud’ system.

The first vehicles are expected to be deployed by the end of this year and the fleet will also grow more than 100. These autonomous vehicles will include cars from different brands and vehicle types.

This test fleet is expected to demonstrate the hybrid solution based on Mobileye and Intel’s technology to prospective customers in a real-world landscape and can also help to interact with regulators.

The demo could also help in mapping and safety validation, which are poised towards future scalability.

Intel’s soon-to-be senior vice president and Mobileye’s future CEO/CTO Amnon Shashua said: “Building cars and testing them in real-world conditions provides immediate feedback and will accelerate delivery of technologies and solutions for highly and fully autonomous vehicles.

“Geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage. Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations.”

Shashua said: “Delivering 100 test cars very quickly will demonstrate how this hybrid system can be adapted to meet customer needs.

“Neither company could do this alone. Given resident skill-sets within the two companies, a standalone fleet of test vehicles is possible almost immediately.”

Intel announced that it will acquire Mobileye earlier this year for $13.5bn. Recently, it has completed the acquisition.
