Wal-Mart Stores Has Revealed Expansion Plans for Its Canada Division

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores has revealed expansion plans for its Canada division that will see it invest US$450m in supercentre and distribution facility projects.

Outlining the plans today (22 January), Wal-Mart said it is planning 37 supercentre projects that will add 1.4m sq ft of retail space and create around 7,000 new stores, trade and construction jobs. The investment is part of the retailer's ongoing store growth and expansion plans, it said.

"Our associates across the country have done an incredible job this past year serving our customers and opening a record number of new stores and supercentres," said Shelley Broader, president and CEO of Walmart Canada. "This year, we are ramping up our focus on lowering prices and helping customers lower their cost of living, as we continue to bring our supercentre format to more Canadians."

Wal-Mart said it will look to introduce the supercentre format to locations in the Maritimes this year. Locations for specific store and distribution centre projects will be announced as the details for each project are finalised, the retailer said.
