Audi has announced its plans to launch an all-electric family-friendly zero-emission SUV in 2018.
After launching its first all electric R8 e-tron car at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, Audi Engineering chief Dr Ulrich Hackenberg revealed the company's plans to introduce a battery-powered "sports activity vehicle".
Hackenberg also used the term 'a technical light tower' to describe the R8 e-tron, as the company plans to use R8 e-tron as a stepping-stone to fulfil its bigger ambition.
AutoExpress cited Hackenberg as saying: "In early 2018, we will launch a battery-powered sports activity vehicle in the large premium segment with a range of more than 500 kilometres (300 miles).
"It will have a new, very attractive design, which we are developing especially for the e-tron range and for battery-powered vehicles.
"This sports activity vehicle will be built in the second generation of the modular longitude platform (MLB 2) - our concept for the optimal drivetrain diversity implementation."
At the motor show, the company also showcased a darkened image of the car on the screen, which is speculated to be the electric SUV, likely to be named Q6 e-tron.
According to reports, the silhouette looked like it belonged to a slot between the company's Q5 and Q7 in the line-up and displayed bulging wheel arches along with sharp headlights and grille.
