So, you say you've always wanted to develop a car app? Well, opportunity is knocking. Ford is making it easier for clever consumers and small businesses to get into the game with its new open developer program.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the automaker announced the launch of a new site that gives developers tools for creating apps that are compatible with Ford vehicles equipped with the AppLink programming interface. This unique, open-source approach to in-car app development could lead to quite creative offerings.
Developer.ford.com includes the software, sample code, test procedures, licensing agreements, and other tidbits necessary to come up with working apps. Ford is even providing a tech support team to help out if entrepreneurial types bent on coming up with the next Angry Birds get stuck.
Oh, but wait. Thankfully, "no games" is one of the rules. Videos or any rich imagery are also out, as is anything with too much text. Ford says it's looking for apps focused on music, entertainment, networking, navigation, and health and wellness.
So if you've got an idea, get busy. The site is live as of today, and there is no cost to developers. Who knows? Your app may be the next sensation to find its way into Fords worldwide. Just please, make sure it isn't distracting.
