General Motors (GM) has confirmed plans to invest $5.4bn at its manufacturing and assembly plants in the US in the next three years, to strengthen its production capabilities and enhance product quality.

The proposed investment will be used for installing and enhancing tools and equipment, to produce cars, trucks and crossovers with better design, quality and technology to win over more customers.

As part of the investment, the US automaker will invest $784m at three of its Michigan facilities.

GM will invest $124m at the Pontiac Metal Center stamping plant, $520m for tooling and equipment at the Lansing Delta Township assembly plant and $139.5m to set up a new body shop and upgrade stamping facility in Warren.

The expansions will retain more than 15,000 existing jobs, while creating 650 new roles across the GM operations.

GM North America manufacturing vice-president Cathy Clegg said: "The common thread among our investments is the focus on product improvements that benefit customers.

"Together with our UAW partners, we're working hard to exceed consumers' ever-increasing quality expectations."

GM said it will reveal further details of the remaining $4.6bn investments and identify plants involved in the coming months.

In April, the company announced plans to expand Arlington assembly plant in Texas with an investment of $1.3bn, to boost production of sport-utility vehicles. The expansion is expected to create 589 new jobs.

Since June 2009, GM has invested approximately $16.8bn at its manufacturing facilities in the US.
