Scania and Stockholm Are Planning to Test Wirelessly Charged Electric-Hybrid City Bus

Swedish vehicle maker Scania and Stockholm based Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) are planning to test wirelessly charged electric-hybrid city bus in Sdertlje, Sweden.

The company aims to replace combustion engines with different types of electrification technologies.

The project will be run through Scania and KTH's jointly operated Integrated Transport Laboratory research centre, and Swedish Energy Agency is likely to fund $1.2m for the project.

One of the charging stations will be designed to facilitate wireless charging from road surface, which is expected to supply enough energy within seven minutes to power a complete journey of the bus.

Scania's electric hybrid city bus is expected to go into daily operation in Sdertlje starting June 2016 as part of the field test.

Scania Hybrid System Development Department head Nils-Gunnar Vgstedt said:"The main purpose of the field test is to evaluate the technology in real-life conditions.

"There is enormous potential in the switch from combustion engines to electrification. The field test in Sdertlje is the first step towards entirely electrified roads where electric vehicles take up energy from the road surface."
