French car parts supplier Plastic Omnium has opened a new $110m Inergy Automotive Systems plant in New Boston, Michigan, for the production of plastic fuel tanks.
Inergy Automotive Systems, a subsidiary of Plastic Omnium, produces automotive components and body modules, automotive fuel tanks and systems, and waste containers. It currently operates 32 manufacturing facilities in 19 countries.
This new 292,000ft2 plant will produce 1.5 million plastic fuel tanks annually using the company's extrusion blow molding process. It is expected to create 400 new jobs in the region.
Inergy Automotive Systems Americas president and CEO Mark Sullivan was quoted by mlive.com as saying: "Since the economic downtown in 2008-2009, I would say in the Metro Detroit-area, there's not been too many projects of this magnitude."
Recently, the company also opened a new automotive development center in Lozorno, Slovakia, to support its exterior and structural components operations.
The company invested nearly €2m in the construction of the engineering center that will enhance the performance of automotive projects by working closely with customers, while reducing development costs.
The center will work mainly with German car manufacturers, the company's largest customers, and offer primary support services for the industrial development of automotive schemes.
