French dairy company Danone is planning to introduce Indian dessert 'Mishti Doi' or sweet yogurt in the European market.
Danone is piloting a project to launch the Indian dairy products in a few international markets. Currently, the company's research and development department in France is examining the recipes of mango lassi, which is a flavoured yogurt-based drink.
The mango lassi may precede the 'mishit doi' in hitting the European store shelves, according to sources as reported by The Times of India.
Danone India managing director Laurent Marcel was quoted by The Times of India as saying: "There is a big similarity between food habits of people in France and India. Along with the tendency of using fresh ingredients to prepare meals, people of both countries are heavy yogurt users.
"The texture of lassi could be very attractive to European palates. Exotic food that can double as healthy alternatives is a big global trend now."
Apart from planning to globalise the Indian flavours, Danone is also planning to bring international products into its Indian portfolio. The dairy company intends to launch ready-to-serve custards soon.
Danone has approached the FSSAI, which is India's apex food regulator, for several product approvals in its nutrition portfolio.
The dairy giant began its business in India in 2010. It started its nutrition business in 2012 after it acquired nutrition portfolio from Wockhardt Group. Since then, it has brought Indian flavlours in its international offerings with products such as mishti doi, 'chaas', lassi, 'dahi', flavoured yogurts and smoothies.
