Tesco to Introduce Vitamin D Enriched Mushrooms

Grocery chain Tesco is all set to launch a range of mushroom products claimed to have enriched vitamin D levels.

The new range which includes Chestnut, Baby Chestnut and Portobello mushrooms will be exclusively available across its stores in the UK starting this month.

While the Vitamin D Chestnut mushrooms come in 250g packs, the Vitamin D Portobello mushrooms and the Vitamin D Baby Chestnut mushrooms both come in 150g packs.

According to Tesco, the mushrooms have been cultivated in extra light to have their vitamin D levels to match that of the wild outdoor grown varieties.

The grocery chain added that they were exclusively grown for it at Ireland based Monaghan Mushrooms.

Tesco mushroom expert Marek Kutera said that it can be increasingly difficult to meet the daily recommendations for vitamin D from a natural source with winter setting in.

Kutera added: “These delicious mushrooms will make it easier than ever for shoppers to get all of their allowance from a key cooking staple.

“Just one portion- around four Chestnut or one to two Portobello mushrooms – in your Spaghetti Bolognese is all it takes.”

Tesco has claimed that the launch of the vitamin D enriched mushrooms is in the wake of an advice from Public Health England which recommended everyone to rely on dietary sources of vitamin D during autumn and winter.

It also said that the launch follows a recent report by health experts in which they expressed concerns that people do not get enough vitamin D that is necessary to keep their bones, teeth and muscles healthy during winter season.

Last month, Tesco announced the offloading of its Euphorium bakery chain to refocus on its core supermarket business.
