The first-ever Mercedes-Benz V8 Supercars have been revealed, as Erebus Motorsport gets ready for its first assault on the Australian racing series.
Based on the newly updated Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG – and built in just 109 days – the three Erebus Motorsport V8 Supercars will join entries from Nissan Motorsport and Ford, along with several teams running racecars based on the new Holden VF Commodore, in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship.
Partnered with AMG and Stone Brothers Racing, Erebus Motorsport – run by the category’s first female owner, Betty Klimenko – will enter the #4 IRWIN Racing entry with Lee Holdsworth in the driver’s seat, the #9 SP Tools entry of Maro Engel and Tim Slade’s #47 Heavy Haulage Australia car.
After this Saturday’s annual V8 Supercars Championship preseason test day at Sydney Motorsport Park, alongside its Holden, Ford and Nissan rivals, the Mercedes-Benz Erebus Motorsport team will join the 28-car grid for the first round of the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship at the Clipsal 500, in Adelaide on March 1-3.
Confidence within the group should be high following the team’s victory at the Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race held last weekend, in an event it tackled in two Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 racecars.
