Heavy-duty transit bus manufacturer New Flyer has secured a contract to supply 50 buses to the BC Transit, British Colombia in Canada.
The deal includes a firm order for 25 units of the Xcelsior 40ft heavy-duty buses powered by the compressed natural gas (CNG) engines and an option for 25 buses to be exercised in the future.
BC Transit will add the new buses to its current fleet of about 650 heavy duty buses and use them to offer services across Nanaimo.
New Flyer CEO Paul Soubry said the company's last project with BC Transit was for Hydrogen Fuel Cell buses in 2009.
"Not only is this the first time we will build our Xcelsior model for BC Transit, it's also the first CNG bus we have ever built for them," Soubry said.
Nanaimo Transit Select Committee Chair Diane Brennan said, "CNG New Flyer buses will help play an integral role in achieving our region's environmental and economic goals."
During the period from 1992 to 2009, the New Flyer had manufactured and delivered 316 units of heavy duty buses to BC Transit.
