Toyota Motor Sales USA has announced its plans to voluntarily recall 960,000 vehicles in the US to address two separate software issues.
Of the total, 700,000 are Prius vehicles of model year 2010-2014, while the remaining 260,000 are Toyota RAV4 of model year 2012 and Toyota Tacoma and Lexus RX 350 vehicles of model year 2012-2013.
Prius vehicles will be recalled to update the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software.
According to the company, current software settings of the affected vehicles may result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged. If this occurs, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. The hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop.
Toyota RAV4, Toyota Tacoma and Lexus RX 350 will be recalled to update the skid control ECU software.
This update is to address an electronic circuit condition, which may cause the vehicle stability control, anti-lock brake, and traction control functions to intermittently turn off. It will make the standard braking operation remains fully functional.
Toyota will notify owners of affected vehicles by first class mail and will offer a software update free of charge.
