Power distributor of Manila Meralco is planning to manufacture its own electric vehicles (EV), in a bid to reduce Philippines’ carbon footprint.
The development of EV's will be a part of government's move towards green transport under its efforts to control dependence on oil and reduce air pollution.
The power distributor, along with the government is expected to build the infrastructure to offer the supply of electricity to e-vehicles, assist in reform issues in the development of the industry, and produce the EVs.
Meralco is also opting new technology to develop affordable fast-charging stations in the country.
The e-vehicle development is also supported by the Philippines Department of Energy (DoE), which had earlier supported the electric tricycle program together with the ADB as part of the National Electric Vehicle Strategy.
DoE, which is currently developing a model for introducing electric tricycles, is also planning to unveil e-jeepneys, e-buses, and e-cars with the help of local entrepreneurs and technical specialists during the development of strategy.
