Ernakulam Milk Union in the Indian state of Kerala is planning to build an aseptic packaging unit for dairy products.
The packaging unit, which has been proposed at the Ernakulam Milk Union's dairy at Tripunithura, will see an investment of around INR240m ($3.9m), The Hindu reported.
The project is in line with the Union's strategy to improve storage and processing capacity of its four dairy units at Kattapana, Thrissur, and Kottayam.
Once operational, the packaging unit will be capable of preserving milk and other dairy products for up to three months without turning sour.
Ernakulam Milk Union chairman P.A. Balan was quoted by the news agency as saying: "It is central to maintaining our competence in the market since we expect customers to restrict the frequency of purchases to perhaps once in a week. In such a scenario they cannot be expected to go out just for the sake of buying milk."
Meanwhile, Ernakulam Milk Union has increased Tripunithura dairy's capacity to 3.50 lakh liters.
