US Plans New Rules for Self-Driving Cars

The US Federal transportation officials are planning to revise polices on self-driving cars and will release an update to the policies in the coming weeks.

In 2013, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued guidance on robot cars where it states to limit the usage of the next generation vehicles for testing purposes.

The 2013 guidance also requires require a licensed driver behind the wheels who will be able to take charge of the test vehicle when necessary.

The Associated Press cited Transportation secretary Anthony Foxx as saying: "I want the posture of our agency to be obviously vigilant on the safety front, but I don't want our agency to be skittish about innovations that are out there."

Foxx also added that the update in policy is being overseen by his the NHTSA and the new policies are expected to be readied in "weeks, not months."

However, Consumer Watchdog has raised concerns regarding the new policy, and it has called on the NHTSA to priorities the safety of drivers and other vehicles first while revising the policy.

Consumer Watchdog's Privacy Project director John M. Simpson said: "Any new policy from NHTSA must continue to put public safety first.

"Any robot car must be equipped so a human driver can take control when necessary."

Self driving cars are on the rise with major automakers like Mercedes Benz, Volvo and BMW and non-automakers like Google venturing into the new age technology.

However, the concerns come after a recent incident where Google Car was pulled over by cops for going to slow on the streets of Mountain View, California.

Google also previously acknowledged that its cars have met with accidents while testing, but said that they were minor and happened mostly due to human error as other cars hit the driverless prototype.
