Clariant Has Unveiled a New Perfluorooctanoic Acid -Free Grease Resistant Additive

Switzerland-based specialty chemicals firm Clariant has unveiled a new perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-free grease resistant additive, 'Cartaguard KHI' for safer food papers and board.

The additive supports the trend toward eco-friendly solutions for ready-to-eat foods such as burgers, pizza, pastries and confectionery. It makes paper grease resistant without releasing impurities into the packaging.

The Cartaguard KHI penetrates into the paper or board and attaches to each fiber to create a protective surface that protects hands and clothing from grease.

It allows manufacturers can produce viable, safer grease resistant packaging to replace traditional plastics and paper-plastic combinations.

Cartaguard KHI is based on C3 technology and offers high level grease resistance demanded by the market.

The molecular structure of the additive comprises long-side chains that repel oil and fat effectively, ensuring better oil and grease barrier performance compared with the current PFOA-free benchmark as well as brings production advantages to the paper mill.

According to the company, the impregnating agent is easy to process and generates hardly any foam during paper production and does not affect either the adhesive or printing properties of the paper.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Evaluation (BfR) and the US American regulatory agency FDA have approved Cartaguard KHI for food contact applications as well as and meets the requirements for food service packaging.
