Hyundai Veloster Recalled Over Sunroof Defect

Almost 900 Hyundai Veloster sports cars have been recalled in Australia to repair a defect with the South Korean coupes’ panoramic glass sunroofs.

The recall affects 882 Veloster models sold in Australia between November 1, 2011 and April 17, 2012.

The official recall notice published on the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) website explains:

“The panoramic sunroof glass may have been damaged when fitted to the vehicle. A damaged sunroof glass may fracture unexpectedly when the vehicle is parked or being driven.

“If the defect occurs, it may pose a laceration hazard to occupants of the vehicle.”

The local sunroof recall follows an investigation into the issue by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US in October 2012 and a subsequent recall by Hyundai USA in December.

Hyundai Australia public relations general manager Bill Thomas confirmed there have been seven reports of cracked sunroofs by local customers but no accidents or injuries linked to the defect.

Thomas said the recall affected only naturally aspirated Hyundai Veloster models, as the Veloster Turbo was not introduced to Australia until after the defective build-date range.

Hyundai Australia encourages affected customers to contact their dealer as soon as possible to arrange an inspection of the sunroof. The inspection should take around 12 minutes and a replacement will take around 30 minutes if required. The work will be completed at no cost to owners.

The Hyundai Veloster enjoyed a hugely successful Australian market debut in 2012. Hyundai Australia sold 4107 across the country, making it by far the most popular vehicle in the sub-$80,000 sports car segment.
