US-based automotive supplier Challenge Manufacturing is planning to build a new automotive components assembly facility in Pontiac, Michigan with an investment of $50m.
The company plans to build a 400,000ft2 facility at 2100 S Opdyke in Pontiac at the former General Motors' Pontiac East Assembly Plant, which was closed in 2009.
Michigan Strategic Fund board has approved a $2.5m grant for the facility. It will also consider a brownfield tax-increment financing reimbursement of $2.2m for the project.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said the jobs to be created by the Challenge facility and about 200 by recycling firm Green Box NA's Detroit project, also approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund.
"It shows our economy is coming and shows people want to come back and invest in our state," Snyder added.
Challenge is a Tier 1 automotive supplier having four facilities in West Michigan. It manufactures metal stampings and welded assemblies like underbody and vehicle roofs for the auto industry.
