Hinshaw Said The New High-End Scott & DuVal Line Has Won Rave Reviews

"Wow!" That's Eric Hinshaw's concise answer when asked what retailers are saying about his new high-end Scott & DuVal line.

Hinshaw, the former Kingsdown executive who heads the new luxury bedding division being launched here by Carolina Mattress Guild, said the line has won rave reviews.

"Retailers from coast to coast and in and outside the country are saying this really feels different and unique," Hinshaw said.

The initial offerings in the line feature a number of furniture industry accoutrements, as befits a line debuting in the Furniture Capital of the World, officials said.

"This is High Point," Hinshaw said. "We are trying to establish the relationship between fine furniture and fine bedding."

The box springs in the foundation are furniture coils that are tied together with helical wires. "Everybody abandoned springs under the mattress," Hinshaw observed, "but they haven't abandoned springs under sofas."

Furniture-grade upholstery materials, furniture cords and pleated drapery fabrics are among the special touches offered by the line, which retails from $1,999 to $5,999.

The showpiece bed in the line is the Le Duvet, which features a 100% down duvet that is attached to the mattress. It can be removed and freshened up, and the mattress itself is luxurious enough to offer a great night of sleep, said Kathy Grigg, vice president of Carolina Mattress Guild.

"It's a showpiece bed, but it is very functional," she said.

Le Duvet, the top bed in the Scott & DuVal line, features a removable down duvet cover that is fastened to the mattress. The beds are offered in innerspring and foam versions, giving retailers the option to use the line as needed to merchandise their floors to provide a variety of feels and constructions at high-end price points, officials said.

Some retailers are zeroing in on the innerspring models, made with high coil count encased coil designs in zoned and layered configurations, while others say the foam models will better help them round out their merchandising programs, Hinshaw said.

All of the beds feature VisTex, a combination of layers of memory foam, gel memory foam, super-soft punched memory foam and gel-poured late

Profiles on the mattresses range from 13.5 inches to 15 inches, but they actually appear to be 16 to 18 inches in height because of the designs and aesthetics of the beds, the company said.

Hinshaw said retailers will determine the length of the warranties on the Scott & DuVal line. "They will be what best fits the particular retailer's sales proposition," he said. That is part of the custom nature of the line, according to Hinshaw.
