Gm Will Invest About $332m at Four Powertrain Facilities

US carmaker General Motors (GM) is planning to invest about $332m at four powertrain facilities in the country to produce new engines and transmissions.

The company's investment will be aimed at manufacturing a new Ecotec small gas engine, a new V6 engine, 8-speed transmission, and tooling for an existing 6-speed transmission.

GM's investment in Michigan facilities includes $215m in Flint powertrain unit and $31.7m in Bay City Powertrain facility for the production of components for the new engine and the small Ecotec gasoline engine.

About $55.7m will be invested in Toledo Transmission Operations to increase the production of a new 8-speed automatic transmission and an existing 6-speed transmission, while $29.4m will go towards manufacturing components for the small gas engine, new 8-speed transmission and existing 6-speed transmissions at Bedford Castings.

General Motors to Invest $332m at Four US Powertrain Plants

The carmaker will use the 8-speed transmissions manufactured at the Toledo facility in its vehicles by late 2016.

Additionally, GM is also increasing its investments in Romulus and Saginaw powertrain plants to $646m to support the production ofthe new V6 engine.

Since 2009, the company has invested about $1.8bn in its six powertrain facilities, which brings its overall investments in the US manufacturing facilities to $8.5bn.
