General Motors (GM) has recalled about 3.16 million vehicles in the US to rework or replace the ignition keys that are reported to move out of the run position inadvertently.

The recall affects cars 3,360,555 vehicles with model year ranging from 2000 to 2014 across North America including US, Canada and Mexico, along with a one of the in production model.

The recalled vehicles include Buick Lacrosse vehicles, Chevrolet Impala belonging, Cadillac Deville bearing model year, Cadillac DTS, Buick Lucerne, Buick Regal LS & GS and the Chevy Monte Carlo.

Ignition switch in the vehicles may possibly move out of the run position if the key is carrying extra weight and experiences some jarring event.

According to the company, usage of a key with a hole, rather than a slotted key would address the concern of unintended key rotation caused by a jarring road event such as striking a pothole or crossing railroad tracks.

The move follows a review of ignition issues of 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars reported in February 2014.

GM is claimed to be aware of eight crashes and six injuries related to the recall.

Additionally, GM has announced recalls for 165,770 vehicles in the US under five separate recalls.
